Sen. Bellino stands up for Second Amendment rights

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joseph Bellino on Thursday voted against unconstitutional and overreaching gun control bills.

“These bills are a serious infringement on the Second Amendment rights and privacy of law-abiding Michigan residents, and they will not alleviate future violence — because criminals intent on doing harm don’t care about the law,” said Bellino, R-Monroe. “These overreaching bills will give people a false sense of security — while restricting everyone’s right to own a firearm, to hunt or even to defend themselves and their family.”

Senate Bills 76-78 would create a universal background check process for all firearm purchases.

SBs 79-82 would create a requirement that firearms be stored and locked securely in areas that minors can access as well as establish criminal penalties for failure to secure firearms.

SBs 83-86 would create “Red Flag” laws that would allow courts to intervene and remove firearms from someone determined to pose a significant risk of personal injury to themselves or others.

“The so-called Red Flag law bills are also severely flawed. They force a gun owner to surrender his or her firearms if flagged as a risk — without any due process,” Bellino said. “This red flag could be started by a family member — but also from an ex-girlfriend or boyfriend without any recency requirements.”

SBs 76-86 now head to the House of Representatives for consideration.
