Bellino: State needs ‘realistic and responsible’ plan to fix the roads

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joseph Bellino, R-Monroe, on Monday issued the following statement in response to the governor’s announced road funding plan:

“Michigan needs a realistic and responsible plan to fix our roads — but under this governor’s leadership, our state’s road quality still ranks in the bottom 10 nationally.

“She started in her first year by proposing a $2 billion gas tax hike — something so bad that not a single Democrat would even introduce it in the Legislature. After that failed, the governor went out on her own and borrowed $3.5 billion, which taxpayers are still paying off. Now, she’s proposing an additional $1.6 billion in higher taxes.

“During six years of this governor, our state budget has increased by over 40%. We don’t need more tax revenue. We should be looking at cutting wasteful and unnecessary spending and putting those taxpayer dollars to better use fixing our roads.”
