LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joseph Bellino is applauding Monroe County Community College for removing “gender-inclusive” bathroom signs following a survey that outlined safety concerns among the campus student community.
“The signs should never have been put up in the first place, and it is far past time that they were removed,” said Bellino, R-Monroe. “In recent months, parents and students across Michigan have raised serious concerns about school policies regarding the use of restrooms and locker rooms. Many students have voiced frustration with their own privacy rights being overlooked and disregarded.
“That is why I introduced a commonsense measure to protect our students. By requiring people at schools to use bathrooms, locker rooms and showers based on their biological sex, we can help ensure a comfortable environment during these important developmental years.”
Senate Bill 9 would require Michigan public schools to ensure that every multiple-occupancy restroom or changing area designated for student use must be used by individuals based only on their biological sex.
“I have three daughters and seven grandchildren, so I know how important it is to provide safe environments for our children and make sure parents have a meaningful say in these discussions,” Bellino said.
