LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joseph Bellino on Monday announced the winning classrooms of his office’s districtwide reading contest — with the top three classes getting pizza parties from the senator.
“I want to thank every class that participated in our reading contest. I was impressed by the effort each school and student put into the competition,” said Bellino, R-Monroe. “My hope from this reading contest was to create a program that promoted reading in and outside of the classroom.”
Bellino announced the three classrooms that read the greatest number of pages during the month of March and the total number of pages read by the students.
The top three classrooms were:
- First place — Kimberly Bolz-Sweebe’s class from Williams Elementary in Jonesville read 66,232 pages.
- Second place — Christy Knapp’s class from Monroe Catholic Elementary Schools-St. Mary Campus in Monroe read 56,711 pages.
- Third place — Alyssa Gonzalez’s class from Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic Academy in Newport read 44,304 pages.
“This year, more than 340 students from 17 classrooms participated in the contest, reading over 350,000 pages,” Bellino said. “Looking at the number of pages read by each classroom during the month of March shows we were successful in our effort. I look forward to continuing our work together to promote reading in our community.”
